The smell of anxious sweat, testosterone and fist-pumping lingers in the air. A group of young men
loiter listlessly around the front entrance.
Guy 1: (Yawns) “I’m bored.”
A young woman approaches
and enters the bar. The three men stare after her appreciatively.
Guy 1 and 2 lock eyes
with each other.
Guy 1: “I call it!”
Guy 2: “I saw her first!”
Guy 1: “What?! You can’t… I already called it!”
State of suspended animation.
Seconds pass.
Guy 3: “I think we all know there’s only one solution here – Rock Paper Scissors.”
(Guy 1 and 2 stare each other down. ‘Eye of the Tiger’
begins to play in the distance.)
(Nail-biting round of rock paper scissors ensues.)
Meanwhile, nearby our
heroine stands waiting for the number 6 bus. She’s observing the “men” from her
vantage point.
Guy 1: “Paper beats rock – ha!”
Guy 2 has been soundly
trumped, and turns away in defeat.
Our blogger’s gaze
meets that of another weary bus traveller. They share a knowing glance and raise
eyebrows at each other in silent communication of “can you believe these guys?!”
Our blogger is so
engrossed in the ensuing melee she does not notice a man approaching the bus
stop and gazing intently after her in a lovelorn fashion.
Blogger *becoming uncomfortable, turns back to our scene,
already in progress*:
Guy 2: “Damn! Best two out of three?”
A rematch has
commenced when two impossibly young women exit the taxi that’s pulled up to the
curb outside the bar.
Guys 1, 2 and 3 forget their arm gesturing
and, becoming pulled into the girl vortex, stare wide-eyed after the young women.
Guys 1, 2 and 3: “HELLO NURSE!”
Guy 1 decides it’s time to turn on the charm
and approaches the first young lady exiting the vehicle.
Guy 1: Well hello
there.
Girl 2 pins Guy 1 to the wall with a
withering glance.
Girls 1 and 2 (sidestepping
the men and entering the bar): “Goodbye.”
Guys 1, 2, and 3 assume their previous positions. All is as it was.
